  • New Requirements for Kiana Passengers February 2018 Recent changes to the Queensland Workplace Laws have made it necessary to reassess the minimum requirements for Kiana passengers to enable us to meet our duty of care and establish an acceptable level of risk. While offering a sailing tour of the Whitsunday Islands and a visit to Whitehaven Beach Kiana is primarily a live-aboard dive boat. Kiana travels 64km offshore to Bait Reef on the outer Great Barrier Reef and is currently the only overnight vessel doing so. Our crew are all qualified Dive Instructors and we take every measure possible to ensure the safety of our guests and mitigate risks. Our recent risk assessment has highlighted 3 areas of risk that we are concerned about. 1. Understanding the instructions of the crew 2. Swimming Ability 3. Mobility in an emergency Understanding Instructions Kiana carries a crew of three. While our crew come from various nationalities the language spoken on Kiana is English. All briefings and emergency instruction are given in English. It is therefore imperative that all passengers have a good understanding of the English Language. In the past we have allowed groups of passengers where one acts as the interpreter. Unfortunately we can no longer accept this scenario. All passengers must be able to clearly understand safety directions and instructions given in English by the crew and be able to complete the required safety forms in English. Swimming Ability Passengers with limited swimming ability will be provided with floatation devices. However in order to reduce the risk to an acceptable level we require that all passengers have at least some swimming ability. Each passenger’s self-assessment of their swimming ability will be required prior to boarding Kiana. All passengers must acknowledge that they are able to swim in deep water without a flotation device unassisted for 1 minute. Mobility Kiana is an 18 meter sailing ketch and as such cannot cater for passengers with limited mobility. In order to meet our minimum safety standards passengers must be able exit the vessel unassisted in an emergency. If necessary passengers with questionable mobility will be required to demonstrate, prior to departure, that they can exit from the interior of Kiana to the muster station on the aft deck unassisted. All passengers must be able to climb a 1.5 meter high ladder unassisted. Passengers who cannot meet the above minimum safety standards will be refused boarding and returned to the booking agent for a refund.

We cruised for three days on Kiana in November 2021. Great crew. They were very knowledgeable about the reef. We went scuba diving on the outer reef with a dive guide the entire time. Safety standards were excellent. Good food. Flexible for vegetarians. We enjoyed the relaxed, stress free holiday pace.

Thanks Brent and Maddy for a wonderful three days of relaxed diving and sailing! Go on this trip if you like chilled out diving at beautiful reefs with good conversation and great food. Excellent value trip that covers Whitehaven, the islands and the reef. See reef restoration projects in action. Support this awesome local business!

My partner and I had an amazing time on the MS Kiana – we absolutely recommend it! Brent and his crew were super knowledgeable and passionate about the region and reef, and took care to ensure that we had a great time. We found the trip had the perfect balance between exploring the Whitsundays and time in the water enjoying the reef and amazing marine life. The view looking out over Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach was breathtaking. Similarly, the visibility out at the outer reef was incredible, allowing us to lap it up with colourful soft and hard corals, rays, maori wrasse, moray eels and more! We were super happy with the food provided – every time we came out of the water we were greeted with delicious snacks and all our dietary requirements were very well catered to.

Our second time with Kiana, and again, has left us speechless! From the crew and their incredible knowledge of the Great Barrier Reef to the food, nothing is short of amazing! Brent and Madi are a pleasure to be around and a wealth of information! Their safety and procedures are second to none. Their knowledge and love of the reef is inspiring, and their engagement with guests is great! Brents background and experience meant we explored some of the most stunning reefs imaginable, ones only previously seen on the screens of an Attenborough doco! If you’re after a true Great Barrier Reef experience, then there is no question that Kiana is an unforgettable experience! We will definitely be back!

What an experience. I wanted a dive specific multi day sail experience, and I got so much more. Brent and Maddie (the dynamic duo of the Great Barrier Reef) went above and beyond to ensure we all had a memorable experience. The food was amazing and plenty of it, the dive gear was all in excellent condition, bunks were comfy, but most importantly we were guided by a master reef guide and dive instructor that just showered us in knowledge and full time stoke. This is not a party boat, it's a trip for people who truly want to experience the beauty of the great barrier reef with an excellent team that care so much for this part of the planet. As a solo traveller with dive experience it was perfect for me, but also would recommend to anyone (non divers) who just wanna get out there!

Wonderful 3 day adventure on Kiana.. Brent our skipper has undoubtedly salt water running through his veins, his knowledge of sailing, diving, marine ecology is truly outstanding.. Throw in his sense of humour and genuine interest and care for his passengers on board just made my trip a magic experience.. Brent's crew on Kiana with dive master Leo and onboard cook and hostess Laya were also equally welcoming.. A whole 3 day adventure on the high seas sailing, diving and snorkeling on the Great barrier reef and chill out time swimming on the most stunning of beach on the planet at Whitehaven beach.. Thank you Brent and crew and thank you to Kiana yacht for getting myself to amazing destinations throughout the whitsundays and reef and safely back home to port.. I will certainly return and highly recommend this trip to all who have an adventurous spirit

We had the BEST time cruising around the Whitsundays with Captain Brent and Skipper/Dive Instructor Maddie on the Kiana. They made sure everyone was safe, comfortable, and well- fed. They also shared their deep knowledge and appreciation of the ocean with us. The upper deck of the boat was spacious and the sleeping quarters were compact but comfortable. The showers were hot, and there was plenty of beverages and tea on board. The food was spectacular! We had lamb roast, spag bol, cheesecake and tons of snacks. We saw stingrays, turtles, a trillion types of fish and even a sea snake (from a safe distance on the boat)! It was the sailing trip of a lifetime, and I would 100% recommend it to anyone who is looking for a bit of adventure. Thank you, Brent and Maddie, for a truly wonderful time!

Despite it being rainy for 2/3 days on this boat, Brent and Maddie made sure we had an excellent time visiting the Whitsundays and diving/snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef. The crew's enthusiasm, professionalism, and expert knowledge ensured we got the best experience possible. The boat itself had ample room both outside and in to relax while wailing. The sleeping space is cozy but the beds were comfortable and I slept well. The food was excellent, and you can buy beer and wine with meals as it's a fully licensed ship. I highly recommend this trip for someone who wants a more in depth and personalized experience compared to a crowded day trip.

I can't speak highly enough about the crew at Kiana, Brent and Maddie made our trip unforgettable! Both of them are extremely knowledgeable about the reef, and they share their knowledge in a very humble and patient way. The food was amazing, everything was fresh and tasted amazing. I would recommend taking the 3-day trip to anyone wanting to experience the Whitsundays at its best. Kiana visits the Outer Reef, so you'll get to see more fishes and other animals than in the inner reef.
